About us: Redeafined is a blog concerned with restoring the balance of information surrounding deaf issues. Media attention and current educational philosophy reveals a striking double standard in the way deaf education and the Deaf community is portrayed, and medical professionals often offer incomplete information to parents of deaf and hard-of-hearing children upon delivery of the news that their child is deaf: that he or she is sick, that he is broken, that he is unable, that he will not be able achieve academic or social successes without being surgically altered.
The above statements are both frightening and completely false. It is my hope that this blog will be a hub of material from multiple sources and will provide information as well as a place to highlight perspectives of the real life experiences of d/Deaf people today. While I respect parents' rights to choose what is best for their child, I personally advocate for bilingual-bicultural education for all deaf children regardless of his or her use of assistive technology. Above all, I value facts and open dialogue about the issues that affect the d/Deaf and hard-of-hearing all over the globe.
